I came across this short film made by a film student whilst looking at clip of the red riding hood film. This was the winner in a competition to create a video based on red riding hood called RED.
I thought it was done pretty well, perhaps better use of spot sounds could have improved it and made it less cheesy, which can be difficult to avoid doing these types of film.

Little red riding hood in still photography
After seeing how red riding hood was shown in the episode of medium I wanted to see how other people used the story and characters in photography in a dark way. What i have found out is whilst the selection of images i have come across are good and depict riding hood how i would have thought to do, there really isn’t a lot of interest in using the characters in photography projects. Most likely due to the limiting nature of the story and kinds of photographs you could create from it.
Below are some of the images i have come across that i thought were interesting.

Medium-Night of the wolf
This episode is very interesting in the way it shows red riding hood in a more serious way, but still following the lines of fantasy. The section of video in question here is from 0:00 to 2:10

Codehunters-Short
Watched this short and thought it was really well done, also having a strange feel to it. It might be handy for anyone who is looking at animation and post-apocalyptic ideas.

More Playtime
In posting my video online, i've come across other videos that follow the same idea, and this one really caught my eye Its very strange, but really encapsulates the kind of feel i want to go for and links to the underlying themes of insecurity and insanity that you may get from Alice in Wonderland.

Video Experiment 1
On friday night i shot this piece of video. It doesn't really have too much of a point, but does follow a narrative. I do think it turned out really well, and the edits work pretty seamlessly. This is the 1st step i've made into the video side of the project, i will use this and work on it to get closer to the final outcome!
Below are some stills from shooting of the video, i will try and get more images of setups from the next video.

Maggie Taylor
Even though she does artwork, it still encapsulates the strangeness of fairy tales and i like the way everything is abstract and has this slightly creepy feel to them.
HP Tilt-shift ad
This is an ad which will be released for HP made by Evan Rohde using tilt shift lenses, and whilst it isn't directly linked to my project, i just thought it was an amazing piece of video!

Ideas of how to look at fairy tales
Now that i had decided on the story i anted to use, i had to look into how i could photograph it. I could have done the stereotypical thing and taken the pictures with people dressed up to look like the characters, but thought that was slightly too clichéd to do this, so wanted to change the context of the story to make it more modern and look at current issues.
While looking at what other people had done in this area, i came across a project by Dina Goldstein called the fallen princess. The images from this project have got my attention and have got me thinking of how i could place Alice in Wonderland into context.

Choosing a story
After thinking about what kind of story i wanted to use, i also had to think about copyright. I looked at local competitions that had short stories entered, but none of the stories i looked at really inspired me. Then after a talk with my housemate, she said how using fairy tales might be a good idea. I thought this had real potential so started looking at all the different fairy tales that were out there.
Wanted to not follow the obvious stories i steered away from red riding hood and goldilocks and the three bears as these have naturally sinister plots to them, and have finally decided on using alice in wonderland.
Looking into the story, i also discovered it is now out of copyright as the author has been dead for so many years, which means i can use it without having to ask for consent from anyone.
Now i have chosen a story, i will look at finding certain line and section sot focus on and create pieces from. I will also look into where fairy tales have been used before in photography and video, and how the desired effect ha been created.

Ideas for the next project
After having the seminar, and having a good talk allowing me to think through my ideas a bit more, i went from having a rough idea of doing something dark and menacing to changing the idea slightly to use a lighthearted story, but shooting video that is more sinister in look but still following the same story.
At the moment i'm trying to think of what stories to use and where i can find them, also a problem i may come across is copyright issues, so i can't really use any published books unless i can get a hold of the author, so i will be looking into the results from certain local story writing competitions and other places where i can get stories royalty free.
If that fails i can try and write my own story to use with the video.
My other issue is trying to create stills for the same project, but i will come up with someway to do this once the video half is underway.

Transitional Spaces: Experience
Below is the final video from what we edited from the footage we were given from the other group.
We're quite happy with the final outcome, especially the soundscape created from the word 'Experience' We found the footage ok, and it had a narrative, but came to no apparent conclusion. We have still be able to make a worthwhile piece of video.

1st Post
Heres the 1st post i've made on this blog, sorry its taken so long, been without any internet access at home.
We've finished our 1st project on transitional spaces, we were pleased with the end result and also found it really interesting at what the other group made with out photos, a couple of which are below.
We're now moving onto thinking of ideas for the next project based on what we've seen. Once we get the internet back i'll be able to post more often!
