Alice in Wonderland Remake by Tim Burton

Seeing Tim Burtons remake I was able to see how to change the tone of the film versions of the book from the much more lighthearted to the darker portrayal of the book in this new version. Focusing on how the characters themselves were made to look, with emphasis on the queen and cheshire cat as these are the roles i want to use in my film.

Below are some pictures of the characters in question:

What next?

Now that i’ve seen what i can make using the story of Alice in wonderland as a basis i will be looking into keeping the characters as i find them compelling but perhaps changing the setting and looking into more of the reasoning behind why these events are occurring.

1st attempt at video for alice in court

I’ve finished editing the video i shot in the courtroom. I am on the whole happy with the outcome for a 1st experimental attempt at this. I hadn’t really thought about sound for this piece, but using what sound i had on camera worked out pretty well. I will be hopefully reshooting this with better props and costume. I also didn’t think about the type of lighting that would be available at the location, which wasn’t adjustable and whilst did work well for some shots, on the whole didn’t really work the way i wanted it to. Next time i’ll remedy this by taking one of the lighting kits with me to the location.

I feel this is a good start and i am on the right track now.

Stills work

These stills have been created with being put into pairs in mind, using half still shots from the video footage and half images i’ve taken to complement or contrast with the video stills, th idea being to show why and how the girl being referred to as alice is where she is, being a prelude as you could say. I was surprised at the quality of the images the video stills created as i would have shot these with a stills camera if time had permitted.

Andreas Stavrinides-Video editing

I found these images taken by Andreas Stavrinides to be very interesting in their styling and use of props, after looking at this and all of the other research i have done i think i know what kind of feel i want from the video, and now i have shot it all i will work in editing it together in a way that i hope will work well.

What you waiting for?

By chance  came across this music video as i was curious about it after listening to the music for a while. A pretty modern and sexual take on alice in wonderland here, i fond the shot using the house very well done!

N.B skip to 3:15 where the music actually starts.

Alice in waterland

I was shown these images taken by Elena Kalis called alice in waterland whereby she submerges the model and props underwater to create scene from alice in. I really like these pictures for the dreamy fantastical landscape they seem to depict, reminding me of alice falling down the rabbit hole.

Using the books

I came across these images by a photographer called Abelardo Morell who used the illustrations from the alice in wonderland books and cut them out to create these images with them. I thought it was a very interesting way of using the original book where the idea came from as part of the the actually images.

I thought the images using water worked really well with the paper cutouts and could be used as a very interesting idea.

Annie Leibovitz and Vouge

I recently was told that Vouge used alice and wonderland as the theme for one of thier ashion shoots and asked Annie Leibovitz to do the photos. While i usually don’t have an interest on fashion photography, i found these images captured more of the reality of the story behind the childlike tale told.

I find the picture using the miniature house to be fantastic!

Alice in wonderland-Where to start

Quickly searching for research i have been presented with a lot of images and video to look into. I thought i would start with an artist i have already looked into. Maggie Taylor has created a whole set of images based on Alice in wonderland which i thought were very good, still showing the abstract nature of the piece.

Moving on

After looking and trying to find goos examples of work based on red riding hood i feel like i’ve exhausted my resources for it, and therefore think i will move on and look into other fairy tales i think may be of interest.

The Company of wolves

I found a clip of this film called the company of wolves. Found it interesting that i was more loosely based on red riding hood and had a much more complex plot made for a more adult audience. I have been thinking of doing something along these lines with the work i make with whichever fairytale i choose to base my work on.
